Frequently Asked Questions

We are a non profit organization that does not receive any state or federal funding. All funding comes from our admission and gift shop sales, as well as donations. We use this money to feed, house, and meet all our animals' needs.

How do you feed all the animals?
We purchase produce and grain from local stores. Our meat is donated from local farmers who lose their livestock as a result of a natural cause, and we pick up roadkill deer, moose, and bear within a 40 mile radius of DEW Haven.
We appreciate your support.

What happens to the animals in the winter?
The animals at DEW Haven stay at our facility year round. We provide proper housing for all of Maine's seasons. For the winter months, we have heated barns for the animals who are unable to adapt to our cold climate. Most of our animals are adaptable to the cold and prefer the cold over our humid summers. Follow us on social media for year-round posts and updates on our animals.
Where do the animals at DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue come from?
All the animals at DEW Haven have their own story and were born in captivity.* Some come from zoos that closed down or did not want them anymore, people who had mistreated them, or owned them illegally, or owned them as a pet and could not take care of them anymore, were purchased/adopted from reputable USDA licensed facilities, or were born at DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue Haven.
*If a rehabber needs to place an animal that cannot be returned to the wild, they can contact us and get state approval for the animal to live out its life at DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue.
What does DEW stand for?
Domestic, Exotic, and Wild animals.
Do we sell animals in the exotic pet trade?
No. We NEVER sell exotic animals in the pet trade. We do not believe individuals should own exotic animals. We save animals from these types of situations.
Is DEW Haven closed?
DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue periodically gets attacked from extremest groups with an agenda to close all zoos. These individuals/groups share fake news, and petitions with horrible photos and stories, meant to anger people into believing and supporting their larger cause. DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue founders and staff care deeply for our animals, and appreciate those who check in with us before believing one-sided petitions and stories that have the potential to damage DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescues’ reputation.
We are extremely fortunate for all those who have visited DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue and support our animals and non-profit organization.
We are a seasonal business. Please check out our hours before planing your trip!
Are pets allowed?
Pets are not allowed to visit DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue Haven. Our animals (especially the large cats and our primates), do not like outside pets.
We do allow service animals. Please understand that even the best trained service animals can upset our animals. We appreciate you being considerate and quickly moving past an animal that does not like your service animal (or who likes your service animal a little too much).
What happens when it rains?
We close for forecasted pouring rain and thunder storms. If we have to close for the day, we post on Facebook at 10 am at the earliest (simply because the weather changes so frequently). We hate to close and understand it can be difficult for travelers. Please understand most of the animals will go in their houses when it rains. Follow our facebook account for any closings.
Are photos allowed?
Pictures can be taken at DEW Haven, but must only be used for personal use (i.e., photos cannot be sold). SELFIE STICKS ARE PROHIBITED (as they could be used to poke animals).
Does DEW Haven | Maine Zoo & Rescue offer group rates?
Yes, DEW Haven has group rates available for official organized groups (e.g., schools, summer camps, rec programs, etc.). Contact us via email to schedule your organized groups visit.
